Writing sound for theatre was one of the happiest accidents of my life. I fell into it through acting - which was what I wanted to do before I realised music was what I loved - during my first term at university. From 2012 to 2014 I designed sound for fourteen plays as part of the drama society, which usually involved sourcing sound effects and creating ambiences, but also allowed me to experiment with playing live, thinking about stage sound holistically, and introducing risk through randomness - which I now realise are disappointingly not common practices. It brought me closer into the creative process than I had ever been as a performer. I was nominated all three years for 'Best Sound' at the drama society's annual awards ceremony, and won it twice.
Since then I've composed expanded sound design for traditional theatre, interdisciplinary performance, devised pieces and contemporary dance, as well as developing my own artistic practice in mediated sound poetry, improvisational piano, generative composition and score writing. By working also as a technical stage manager, technician and sound engineer, I've been able to see more theatre than I could have ever afforded to go to - and it's given me invaluable insight into how sound is, can and should be treated on stage. My sound designs have been heard at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Leeds Playhouse, Cambridge University and at many fringe venues and festivals in London, Brighton, Manchester, Leeds and Edinburgh.
I want to work with companies and creators who want to change the current artistic landscape, who are open to the rich possibilities of thinking through sound. I want to develop new forms of expression in live performance.
