When They Disappear

Onion Lullaby

Extract from CASA 2014 Scratch Winners performance of When They Disappear (aka Besame Mucho) by Onion Lullaby (aka Las Nanas De La Cebolla) - a visual theatre performance which juxtaposes the violence of women in rural mexico wih the migration of the monarch butterflies.

The segment above, using object puppetry and tableaux as language, depicts the breakdown of a relationship by an intruder - an unknown man breaks into their newly made house, rapes her and takes him away. When the husband returns, broken, he finds his wife pregnant with the son of the rapist. She implores him to stay but he cannot, leading to a final symbolic breakage of the family dream.

The sound was performed live using a midi drum pad for live triggering and manipulating soundtracks, ambiences, somatic drones and vocal recordings. This was in order to the mirror the complex and devised nature of the imagery.
